Quick answer: Dogs are allowed on Burnham-on-Sea beach in Areas 2 and 3 between October and April. Area 1 (the main central beach between the Jetty and the Pavilion) is banned all year round. Rules are enforced by Somerset Council under a PSPO, with fines of up to £1,000 issued on the spot. Always check the signs when you arrive.

This is the part that catches people out. Areas 2 and 3 follow the seasonal pattern most seaside towns use, banned in summer, open in winter. Area 1 does not follow that pattern at all. It is banned every single day of the year, with no October-to-April window.

The details for each zone

Area 1: Jetty to Pavilion

This is the stretch most visitors default to. It is the central seafront, closest to the pier, and the most visible and accessible part of the beach from the town centre.

That is exactly the problem. A dog owner arriving in Burnham without reading the rules first would almost certainly end up here first, and be in breach of the byelaw without realising it. There is no seasonal exception. Dogs are not permitted on this stretch of beach, the jetty, or the Esplanade steps, at any time of year.

Area 2: Jetty to Yacht Club

Slightly less central than Area 1, but perfectly accessible on foot from the seafront. From October to April, dogs are allowed here, which makes it a genuinely good option for a winter run along the sand.

In summer, the same May to September ban applies as everywhere else on the main beach. Outside those months, this is one of the two zones where your dog can actually go on the sand.

Area 3: Pavilion to Maddocks Slade

This is probably the most practical zone for dog owners, and the one we would point most people towards outside summer. It sits further from the main tourist cluster than Areas 1 and 2, and from October to April it is unrestricted for dogs.

It is also the direction you want if you plan to extend the walk. Heading north past Maddocks Slade takes you towards Berrow Dunes, opening up considerably more space than the town-centre beach offers on its own.

When is the best time to visit with a dog?

October to April: both Area 2 and Area 3 are open, and this is genuinely good beach walking. It is quieter than summer, and Somerset's coast has its own bleak, atmospheric charm once the crowds have gone.

May to September: no beach access in any of the three zones. The Esplanade and seafront promenade are still open and still a lovely walk, you just need to keep off the sand itself.

Always: check the signs when you arrive. Zone boundary positions are marked on the beach but can shift slightly with the tide, so what you see on the ground is the thing to trust, not just this guide or any other.

A proposal to relax these rules was put to Somerset Council's Executive in May 2024 and was rejected after local residents voiced opposition. These rules are confirmed as current, with no change expected in the near future.

What about Berrow and Brean?

Berrow Beach, just north of Burnham, and Brean further along the coast, both have their own rules, generally more relaxed than Burnham's town-centre zones. That makes them worth knowing about if you are visiting the area with a dog in summer.

The Iron Duke is the standout for location, right on The Esplanade and a straight line from the pier. Dogs are confirmed allowed inside the main bar.

The Railway is the best-verified pub in town for dog amenities specifically, with dogs inside, a garden, confirmed water bowls, and a separate restaurant area. It is also the shortest walk back from the seafront of any verified pub in town.

The Somerset & Dorset Inn sits just around the corner from those two, with dogs allowed inside and a garden as well.

Dunstan House Inn, a short walk inland, has the fullest verification record of any pub in Burnham: dogs inside, garden, water bowls, treats, and a restaurant area all confirmed.
