Are Dogs Allowed on Weston-super-Mare Beach? The Complete 2026 Guide

Weston-super-Mare beach is enormous. On a clear day you can see Wales. On a busy day in August you can barely see the sand for windbreakers. And somewhere in between "enormous" and "absolutely rammed with families" lies a set of dog access rules that are more nuanced than most people expect.

The short answer is yes, dogs are welcome. The longer answer involves knowing which bit of beach you're standing on and what month it is. Here is the longer answer.

Quick answer: Dogs are allowed on Weston-super-Mare beach in the area between the Grand Pier and Knightstone Island all year round. The main central beach (between Royal Sands and the Grand Pier) bans dogs from 1 May to 30 September between 9am and 7pm, but allows them before 9am and after 7pm even in summer. Sand Bay (3 miles north) is dog-friendly all year with no restrictions. The Grand Pier itself now permanently welcomes dogs. North Somerset Council can issue £100 on-the-spot fines for breaches, rising to £1,000 if prosecuted. Always check the signs when you arrive.

These rules are set and enforced by North Somerset Council, the unitary authority responsible for Weston-super-Mare (not Somerset Council, a separate authority that covers towns further south such as Burnham-on-Sea). The main beach: what you actually need to know

The stretch between Royal Sands and the Grand Pier is where everyone gravitates. It's the central seafront, the most visible from the town, and the one most visitors head to automatically without checking anything first.

That's exactly where the seasonal ban applies. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are banned here between 9am and 7pm. A family driving over from Bristol on a Saturday in July, expecting to walk the dog along the main beach at 11am, will be turned back.

Outside those hours, though, it's a different story. Before 9am and after 7pm, even in the height of summer, dogs are allowed on this stretch. Early morning here is genuinely lovely, quieter, with dramatic light over the Bristol Channel, and your dog can run on the sand without restriction.

Outside the summer season entirely, from 1 October to 30 April, the whole ban lifts and the main beach is open to dogs all day, every day.

The Grand Pier: something changed in 2025

If you were told dogs aren't allowed on the Grand Pier, forget it. That information is out of date.

Following a successful one-month trial in June 2025, dogs are now permanently welcome on the Grand Pier, confirmed by Weston Mercury in July 2025. The trial alone saw an estimated 25,000 dog paws cross the boardwalk in a single month, and the pier decided that was reason enough to make it permanent.

It's not a grudging allowance either. The pier has genuinely built for it: water stations dotted around the boardwalk, complimentary dog biscuits, dog-friendly ice cream, and a dog-themed grab game among the arcade attractions. Zones are clearly signposted so you know where you and your dog are welcome.

The pier even has a designated Chief Canine Officer, a very good dog named Ripley, whose job title alone tells you how seriously this is being taken.

There are still rules, sensibly. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, some breed restrictions apply, and the pier runs a "three barks and you're out" policy. Dogs aren't allowed on the furniture, and they're not permitted inside Tiffany's Restaurant.

The year-round option next to the pier

If you're visiting in summer and don't fancy an early start, the stretch between the Grand Pier and Knightstone Island is your answer. Dogs are allowed here all year round, with no seasonal restriction at all.

It's a shorter stretch of beach than the main central section, but it's immediately accessible from the pier and gives you genuine sand access at any time of day, any month of the year. Dogs must stay on a lead on the promenade section running alongside it.

Sand Bay: the insider tip

Ask a Weston local with a dog where they actually go, and a good number will say Sand Bay rather than the town beach. It's roughly three miles north of the town centre, off the A370, and it's dog-friendly all year round with no restrictions to work around at any time of year.

It's quieter than the main beach too, with wide sandy paths and none of the seasonal complications. Local press has called it the hidden gem of Weston, and it's not hard to see why once you've walked it.

There's a proper reward at the end of it as well. The Sand Bay Tea Room serves doggy Afternoon Cream Teas, confirmed by Weston Mercury, which is about as good a reason as any to make the short drive north.

The Uphill option (south)

Heading the other way, the stretch between Royal Sands and Uphill is also dog-friendly all year round, and it sees far fewer visitors than the central beach.

It's a proper walk rather than a seafront stroll. At the Uphill end you'll find a small medieval church on the hill above the village, a working boatyard, and a much quieter pace than the town centre offers.

It's also a good excuse for a pub stop. The Ship Inn, right on Uphill Way, is verified dog-friendly, with dogs allowed inside, water bowls out, and treats behind the bar, a natural end point for the walk. The Boathouse, also in Uphill, is another verified option if the Ship Inn is busy.

Weston Marine Lake and the promenade

The Marine Lake is the one clear no. Dogs are not allowed on the beach, the lower apron, or in the water at the Marine Lake, at any time of year, under North Somerset Council's Public Spaces Protection Order. Dogs are allowed to use the crossing at the causeway, since that's a public right of way, but that's the extent of it.

The wider promenade is a different matter. The full two-mile stretch between Royal Sands and Knightstone Island is always accessible for dog walking, on a lead, whatever the season and whatever the beach rules below it happen to be that day.

Enforcement: the fines are real

North Somerset Council enforces all of this under a Public Spaces Protection Order, and patrols have stepped up in recent years following growing complaints. This isn't a soft, rarely-checked rule.

A breach can mean a £100 fixed penalty notice issued on the spot. If it goes to prosecution, the maximum fine rises to £1,000. Worth knowing before you assume nobody's watching on a quiet Tuesday morning.

Before you go

Parking. There are multiple car parks along the seafront. The ones nearer Sand Bay tend to be easier to find a space in during summer, since most visitors cluster around the pier and the main beach car parks.

By train. Weston-super-Mare railway station is a 7-minute walk from the Grand Pier, according to the pier's own website, so it's a genuinely easy trip without a car if you're coming from Bristol or further afield.

Tides. Weston has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, second only to the Bay of Fundy in Canada. At low tide the sand stretches out for hundreds of metres. At high tide there's very little beach left at all. Worth checking tide times before a winter morning walk, especially if you're hoping to let the dog off to run properly on open sand.

Facilities. There are toilets along the seafront, though they're paid, so bring change, and parking is extensive if not always cheap in peak season.
